Santa Maria delle Grazie
The basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie (“Holy Mary of Grace”) was ordered in 1463 by the Duke of Milan Francesco I Sforza. He asked for the construction of a Dominican monastery and of a church where there was a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The church is in Lombard gothic style and is an Unesco humanity patrimony thanks to its historical and cultural importance.
Santa Maria delle Grazie is in fact known in the world and admired by many visitors because it hosts in the dining hall the famous painting of Leonardo da Vinci, the Last Supper, which represents Jesus’ last supper.
In 1943 the basilica was destroyed by the Anglo-American bombings and the effect was devastating. By chance the Last Supper was not damaged and the rebuilding of the church allows today to admire its precious works of art.
